On June 8, members of the Battle of Gloucester Reenactment Committee visited Gloucester High School for a day of engaging and interactive presentations.
Each assembly began with several short reels providing context for the battle. Following the videos, costumed historical interpreters representing women and men, American and British, described the battle and its effect on themselves and history. Students also learned about the workings of a musket, the ways in which women helped supply the army, and after a bit of encouragement from their friends, some students even tried on the clothing of an 18th century sailor!
The interpreters also described the activities planned for the upcoming Battle of Gloucester event weekend which will include naval and land battle reenactments, as well as numerous historical interpretive stations focused on a variety of topics relating to Gloucester in 1775.
The committee looks forward to seeing many of the students at the commemoration of this historical event in Gloucester history on June 20-21 in Stage Fort Park.
